History/Overview
The 718 Cayman arrived as a fixed-roof companion to Porsche's Boxster, a more affordable sports car to sit alongside the 911 at dealers. The car is now in its third generation, offering the Porsche sports car experience for those who don't have the need (or possibly budget) for a 911.
What's New / Key Changes from Last Year
Just a few years into the latest generation, there are only some small changes to the car. Like dual-zone climate control, heated seats, and standard Apple CarPlay. The GTS 4.0 can also be fitted with a PDK dual-clutch automatic.
Available Trims
The 718 Cayman is available in Cayman, Cayman T, Cayman S, and GTS 4.0. Cayman and T get a 2.0L turbo flat-four making 300 hp, S gets 350 hp from a 2.5L turbocharged flat-six, and GTS 4.0 has a 394 hp naturally aspirated 4.0L flat-six.
Standard Features
Porsche 718 Cayman offers Bi-Xenon headlights with Porsche dynamic light as well as LED taillights. It has cruise control, dual-zone climate, sports seats with partial leather covering, seat heating, six-speaker audio, and Porsche Communication Management with Apple CarPlay.
T adds torque vectoring including locking rear differential, Sport Chrono Package with new driving modes and Sport Plus mode, performance display, lowered suspension, Porsche active suspension management, 20-inch wheels, Sport-Tex seats, and Porsche Car Connect.
Cayman S is equipped like the standard model, but offers the more powerful engine and larger brakes. GTS 4.0 adds the 4.0L engine, Sport Chrono Package, torque vectoring with locking rear differential, active suspension with lowered chassis, six-piston brakes, 20-inch wheels, auto-dimming mirrors, special sports seats and steering wheel, and GTS trim.
Key Options
Porsche offers dozens of exterior and interior colour and trim options as well as multiple wheels. The important options include ceramic brakes and adaptive cruise.
A Premium Package includes LED lights, Bose audio, ventilated seats, lane change assist, and heated wheel. Active suspension management is offered as are torque vectoring and Sport Chrono on models that don't come equipped as standard.
Fuel economy
The Cayman and Cayman T are estimated to return 11.0 L/100 km city, 8.7 highway with the PDK and 11.7/8.9 for the manual. The S should do 12.2/9.2 and 12.5/9.6, with the GTS estimated to return 12.3/9.8 and 14.0/10.0.
Competition
The Boxster competes with sports cars like the Chevrolet Corvette, Toyota Supra, BMW Z4, and Audi TT, as well as BMW's M4 Coupe, the Jaguar F-Type, and even the quicker versions of Ford's Mustang.
